How to play Monopoly Deal
Monopoly Deal is a fast card game for 2 to 5 players. You collect property sets, charge rent and steal from the other players. The first player with 3 full sets of different colours wins.
Quick rules
Goal. Collect 3 full property sets of different colours before anyone else.
Your turn. Draw 2 cards, or 5 if your hand is empty. Then make up to 3 plays. A play is to bank a card, lay a property or play an action or rent card. Then end your turn and discard down to 7 cards.
Paying. When another player charges you, pay with cards from your bank and your properties. You never pay from your hand. You get no change.
Just Say No. Play it to cancel an action or a rent card against you. It does not use a play, and you can play it on another player's turn.
Your cards
Your cards are in 3 places.
- Your hand is secret. Only you see it.
- Your bank is your money. Every player sees it.
- Your properties are on the table in sets of one colour. Every player sees them.
At the start, the deck has 106 cards and each player gets 5 cards. The app puts the players in a random turn order.
Your turn
Draw
At the start of your turn, draw 2 cards. If your hand is empty, draw 5 cards. If the deck is empty, the discard pile is shuffled to make a new deck.
Make up to 3 plays
Each of these is one play:
- Put a card in your bank. Money, action, rent and two-colour property wild cards can go in the bank at their value. A card in the bank stays money for the rest of the game.
- Lay a property or a property wild card in your properties. You choose the colour of a wild card when you lay it.
- Play an action card.
- Play a rent card.
- Put a house or a hotel on a full set.
You can end your turn after 0, 1, 2 or 3 plays.
Move your wild cards
On your turn, you can move a property wild card from one of your sets to another, or change its colour. You can also move a house or a hotel to another of your full sets. These moves are free. They do not use a play, and you can make them before, between and after your plays.
End your turn
If you have more than 7 cards in your hand, discard down to 7. Then the next player takes a turn.
The cards
Money cards
There are 20 money cards: six 1M, five 2M, three 3M, three 4M, two 5M and one 10M.
Property cards
There are 28 property cards. A full set needs a different number of cards for each colour. The rent goes up with each card in the set.
| Colour | Cards in a full set | Rent for 1, 2, 3 and 4 cards |
|---|---|---|
| Brown | 2 | 1M, 2M |
| Light blue | 3 | 1M, 2M, 3M |
| Pink | 3 | 1M, 2M, 4M |
| Orange | 3 | 1M, 3M, 5M |
| Red | 3 | 2M, 3M, 6M |
| Yellow | 3 | 2M, 4M, 6M |
| Green | 3 | 2M, 4M, 7M |
| Dark blue | 2 | 3M, 8M |
| Railroad | 4 | 1M, 2M, 3M, 4M |
| Utility | 2 | 1M, 2M |
Property wild cards
There are 11 property wild cards. 9 of them count as one of their two colours. The 2 multicolour wild cards count as any colour. A multicolour wild card has no money value, so you cannot bank it. A set of only wild cards is a full set when it has enough cards.
Rent cards
There are 13 rent cards. A two-colour rent card charges every other player. A wild rent card charges one player you choose, for any colour you own.
Action cards
There are 34 action cards.
| Card | Value | Cards in the deck | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deal Breaker | 5M | 2 | Take a full set from another player, with its house and hotel. |
| Just Say No | 4M | 3 | Cancel an action against you. |
| Sly Deal | 3M | 3 | Take one property from another player. It cannot come from a full set. |
| Forced Deal | 3M | 3 | Swap one of your properties for one of another player's. Theirs cannot come from a full set. |
| Debt Collector | 3M | 3 | One player you choose pays you 5M. |
| It's My Birthday | 2M | 3 | Every other player pays you 2M. |
| Pass Go | 1M | 10 | Draw 2 cards. |
| House | 3M | 3 | Add 3M to the rent of a full set. |
| Hotel | 4M | 2 | Add 4M more to the rent of a full set that has a house. |
| Double the Rent | 1M | 2 | Play with a rent card to double the rent. |
You can bank any action card at its value in place of playing it.
Rent
To charge rent, play a rent card for a colour that you own at least one property of. The rent is the amount for your best set of that colour, from the property table. A house adds 3M and a hotel adds 4M more.
Double the Rent goes with a rent card and uses one more play. With 3 plays left, you can play a rent card and 2 Double the Rent cards for 4 times the rent.
Houses and hotels
A house goes on a full set that has no house. A hotel goes on a full set that has a house and no hotel. A set holds at most one house and one hotel. Houses and hotels never go on railroads or utilities.
Paying
When a rent card, It's My Birthday or Debt Collector charges you, you pay with cards from your bank and your properties. You can pay with houses and hotels too. You never pay from your hand.
You get no change. If you pay too much, the rest is lost.
If your whole bank and all your properties are worth less than the amount, you give all of them. If your bank and properties are empty, you pay nothing.
Money, action and rent cards that you get as payment go to your bank. Property cards go to your properties. A property wild card that you get keeps its colour. You can move it after. A house or a hotel that you get as payment goes to your bank as money.
Just Say No
When another player plays an action or a rent card against you, you can play Just Say No to cancel it for you. It is free and does not use a play.
The other player can then play their own Just Say No to cancel yours. You can answer with another, and so on. The last Just Say No played decides. Every Just Say No in the chain goes to the discard pile.
When a card charges many players, each player answers for themselves. A player who says no pays nothing, and the others still pay. A cancelled card still uses a play.
Winning
The first player with 3 full sets of different colours wins at once. This can happen on another player's turn, for example when you get a property as payment. Two full sets of one colour count as one colour.
How this app rules the unclear cases
The printed rules leave some cases open. This app plays them like this:
- Pay only what you need. You choose the cards to pay with, but you cannot add a card that you do not need. If you can take away one card and still cover the amount, the payment is too big. This stops players from dumping cards that they do not want.
- Extra cards start a new set. A set never has more cards than a full set needs. A fourth red property starts a new red set. Two sets of one colour join when their cards fit in one set.
- A wild card you take keeps its colour. When you take a property wild card with Sly Deal or Forced Deal, it keeps the colour it had. You can move it to another colour after.
- A payment can break a full set. You can pay with a card from a full set. The set is then no longer full.
- Multicolour wild cards stay on the table. They cannot go in the bank. You can pay with one only when you give everything on your table.
- Sets to win. The host can set the number of full sets to win from 1 to 5 before the game starts. It is 3 by default.
- Two winners at once. If one move gives two players their sets, the player whose turn it is wins. If neither of them has the turn, the player who is first in the turn order wins.
